Camp Experience FAQs

  • Each participant is supported by two dedicated buddies, who have completed Flying Fox’s tailored training program to learn the foundations of inclusion, communication, and personal support. These buddies are there every step of the way throughout the fun, the challenging moments and as backup dancers at the talent show.

  • Overseeing each group are our most experienced volunteers, our team leaders, who help guide the experience, keep the energy high, and ensure everything runs smoothly.

  • Behind the scenes, our Flying Fox staff, medical team and night staff provide an extra layer of care and expertise. Our night staff stay awake throughout the night to make sure anyone who needs support or reassurance has it right there when they need it.

  • Camp activities focused on fun, friendship, and inclusive experiences for young people of all abilities. Some activities may include swimming, silent discos and beach days. Most importantly, every 3-night camp will include a talent show!

  • Everyone on camp, from our participants, to our volunteers, to our staff, develop life skills and social skills in a safe environment. From trying new foods, soaring through the air on the flying fox, to shining at the talent show - we guarantee growth!

  • Enjoy peace of mind knowing your loved one is safe, supported, and having an amazing time! Some of our favourite feedback is from families when they tell us they expected just a few days off, when actually they got an emotionally rejuvenating moment to catch their breath.

  • Participants and volunteers will be grouped into the most comfortable sleeping arrangements for everyone.

Who are Flying Fox programs for? ↓

Hangouts

$35 per Hangout

  • $35 per Hangout covers support and admin costs.

    All other program costs, including meals, are covered by the support of our corporate and philanthropic partners.

    Invoices are issued quarterly and may be claimed under Core NDIS item 04_104_0125_6_1 (Community Social and Recreational Activities).

    No further out of pocket costs apply.

  • All Flying Fox overnight programs include a minimum 1:1 support ratio, meaning each participant is supported by their own dedicated support person throughout the program.

    Our pricing reflects this level of support and is designed to ensure safety, consistency, and a high-quality experience for every participant.

    We are also significantly more affordable than comparable providers offering equivalent 1:1 supported programs:

    • Approximately 40% lower than competitors for weekend programs (3 days, 2 nights)

    • Approximately 20% lower than competitors for school holiday programs (4 days, 3 nights)

    Beyond our high support ratio, we go further in several key areas:

    • Highly trained teams: staff, volunteers, and buddies trained across disability, behaviour, and mental health

    • Dedicated on-program medical support: Head Medics and medical team present throughout each program

    • Individualised preparation: tailored support plans, home visits, and pre-program communication

    • Participant-centred tools: visual schedules and social stories for confidence and predictability

    • Meaningful social outcomes: curated friendship groups and structured programs for genuine connection

    • 24/7 care and communication: overnight support, night staff, and regular family updates

    • Focus on wellbeing and personal growth: personalised experiences prioritising safety, confidence, and enjoyment

    • Long-term outcomes: programs supporting independence, social networks, and community participation

    • Wrap-around family support: NDIS planning assistance, support letters, and provider coordination

    • Strong sector partnerships: established relationships with Giants Steps, All Things Equal, and Stars and the Moon

  • Flying Fox programs can be invoiced under both Core Supports and Capacity Building Supports, depending on a participant’s NDIS plan and individual goals. We are always happy to work with families, Support Coordinators, and Plan Managers to ensure invoicing aligns appropriately with each participant’s plan.

    Core Supports

    Within Core Supports, we can invoice under:

    • Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation – Access Community Social and Rec Activities (Line item: 04_104_0125_6_1); or

    • Assistance with Daily Tasks in a Group or Shared Living Arrangement - Short Term Accommodation / Respite (STA / STR) and Assistance (Line item: 01_058_0115_1_1).

    Capacity Building Supports

    Within Capacity Building Supports, Flying Fox may invoice under:

    • Increased Social and Community Participation - Development of Daily Living and Life Skills (Line item: 09_009_0117_6_3); or

    • Increased Social and Community Participation – Innovative Community Participation (Line item: 09_008_0116_6_3).

  • We may be able to offer bursaries to support families experiencing financial constraints, including limited NDIS funding.

    Bursaries are needs-based and supported through donated funds. The process is overseen by our independent Bursary Committee.

Flying Fox exists to provide opportunities for young people to have fun and make friends, to take risks and try new things, to go on adventures, and to experience all that life has to offer.

We know that a successful time away from home is different for everyone, and we celebrate that for some people even just being on camp is a big win.

Supports built around you

On our camps, as well as throughout our regular social activities each week, we design supports around each participant. The way we support shifts to match what each person actually needs. This is all designed in consultation with our participants and their families or support people.

Who comes on Flying Fox programs?

There are many people who come on Flying Fox programs, including:

  • Autistic young people across all support levels

  • Young people with intellectual disability

  • Young people with ADHD

  • Young people with physical disability

  • Young people with complex support needs

Across these different groups of young people, there is diversity and commonality. Some of our participants see Flying Fox as a space to relax with friends away from home, others see it as their space to take risks and try new things. Either way, personalities always shine through and we always see the very best of every individual when they are away on camp with us.

Buddy Ratio on Camp

Two trained buddies for every participant

On camp, every participant is paired with two trained buddies. That 2:1 ratio is what makes it possible to run inclusive, high-energy programs for young people with a wide range of support needs. Hangouts run with slightly less support, which fits the more casual, drop-in feel of weekly events.

    If you’re aged between 8-35 and you’re keen to join a Flying Fox program, please get in touch! (Don’t worry, we make exceptions too!)

    Flying Fox strives to facilitate experiences for people with disability that foster their growth, confidence and independence over time and uphold principles of dignity and respect for everyone involved.

  • As many as you like! We love deepening the relationships with our participants, so the more the merrier!

    We will work with you through the journey to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible before getting involved in Flying Fox.

    Wherever necessary, we facilitate home visits and pre-camp catch-ups prior to participation.
